Google Buzz takes mobile location services to the next level: "

Google just announced that it's bringing some serious location-based integration to its services, all centered around the new Buzz social networking tool built into Gmail. Google's going to do location better than the usual latitude / longitude coordinates -- it's able to snap those to actual place names and then take context-aware actions depending on where you are. The new location services is integrated into the main mobile Google.com search page and the new buzz.google.com page for the iPhone and Android

UK-based Times Online is reporting that Google is developing a mobile phone service that will have the ability to translate speech, from one language to another, on the fly. Google’s hoping to build off of their text-to-text translation engine — which is currently capable of translating 52 languages

Its one of the hardest things to deal with, but its a reality that americans face by the thousands every day...NO JOB.

Rumor Mill: Verizon will still get the iPad: "
Some industry watchers were surprised last week when Apple announced that its latest innovation, the iPad tablet, will launch on AT&T Mobility's wireless network--instead of Verizon Wireless' (Verizon long had been rumored as an Apple partner for the gadget). So I am thinking, What would I do differently if I owned a major wireless carrier? While I may not be qualified to do so, I have been in the business long enough to give some really good, blunt advice.  So please read below my open letter to each wireless carrier I felt important. I wrote these as though I had a quick paragraph to tell each company what they need to do.  A quick summary if you will.....

2009 brought with it a lot of buzz on the streets  with Unlimited Monthly plans by such companies as Cricket Wireless, Metro PCS, Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, and the big four.  At the end of 2009 and this year , the competition for this sector of the business is heating up and has become more competitive than ever before.

As I wrote about in my article Wireless Predictions for 2010, I stated that there needed to be some consolidation in the market for the "Tier B" carriers.  Since then , big carriers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T have reduced their monthly unlimited plans to reach into the little guys pockets.  Here are the points that I feel are important to show just how much this is heating up....

Michael Dell pulls Mini 5 Android tablet from his parka, offers to put one in yours in 'a couple of months' (video): "

Hot on the heels of us thinking maybe the Dell Streak / Mini 5 was possibly due for a name change to the 'M01M,' a roving heckler from TechCrunch managed to catch the man himself, Michael Dell, on the street and get a quick demonstration of the thing -- which he with no uncertain terms referred to as the 'Mini 5.' He swiped through a number of home screens and quickly showed the five megapixel camera on the back, mentioned 3G wireless, and then tucked it away again. No price was given, but the biggest news is confirmation that it's coming out in 'a couple of months,' which is something of a surprise given the company was still calling it a concept just a few weeks ago. Handset market bounces back in Q4: "
The 'year-long recession' in the handset industry is over--at least according to research firm Strategy Analytics. The firm found that handset shipments rose by 10 percent in the fourth quarter to 324.4 million units, up from 293.8 million in the year-ago quarter

AT&T nears record with 2.7M net adds in Q4: "
Verizon Wireless' aggressive holiday ad campaign slamming the quality of AT&T Mobility's 3G network didn't stop customers from signing up for AT&T wireless service. The carrier rounded up 2.7 million net new wireless subscribers during the fourth quarter--the second highest quarterly gain in the company's history.

However, issues surrounding AT&T's wireless network continue to be a sore spot for the carrier, and executives spent much of their quarterly conference call discussing what AT&T is doing to improve it. Specifically, AT&T will spend $18 billion to $19 billion on its network this year, notably above the $17.3 billion it spent in 2009. This includes an increase of $2 billion for improving backhaul capacity.

Microsoft hints at Windows Mobile 7 announcement at MWC: "

Yesterday, on Microsoft’s earnings call, CFO Peter Klein briefly mentioned that Microsoft’s “next mobile operating system” would be announced “in a few weeks.” Conveniently, just a few weeks from now, the Mobile World Congress convention will be taking place — beginning February 15th —

Palm stock rallies 11% after Verizon iPhone not announced: "

Everybody and their mother thought that a Verizon iPhone announcement was a sure thing for Wednesday’s Jobsnote. While the magical and revolutionary (Steve Jobs’ words, not ours) iPad was unveiled to an overhyped public, the iPhone for Big Red was nowhere to be seen, not even as one of Jobs’ famous “Oh, one more thing” moments.
Judging by the depressed price of Palm’s stock that morning, investors seemed to feel the same way, pushing Palm’s stock down nearly 3% by the time Jobs took the stage.

Apple's iPad brushes aside AT&T: "
The iPad is finally here, but it's not quite what the market was expecting. In the days leading up to the event, reports were all over the map: Apple would make the tablet for AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless' 3G networks; Apple would introduce the new version of the iPhone OS; and--one more thing--Apple CEO Steve Jobs would reveal an iPhone for Verizon at the end of the presentation. Admittedly, FierceWireless engaged in this speculation as well.

Apple announces the iPad, changes the course of history: "

Today at 10:00AM PST, hundreds of thousands of eyes were glued to computer screens as Steve Jobs made one of the most anticipated announcements in Apple history: the iPad. Some might giggle or scoff at the name, but that’s where the snark stops. The hardware and software had event attendees up on their feet applauding. Before we get into a deep run-down of the device, here are some specs you need to know right off the bat (we’ll continue updating these if there are move developments):

Okay, we're not anywhere close to 100 percent on this, but we just got a blurry screenshot of something we're told is the Motorola MOTOSPLIT, a Snapdragon-powered Android set in the vein of the Droid with a totally wild split-horizontal sliding QWERTY keyboard. Yeah, we want one -- it reminds us of the beloved Nokia 6820, although it's much thinner. We're told this thing is coming to AT&T in Q3, which makes sense; we've only pinned down three of Ma Bell's five planned Android devices, and this would be a nice higher-end compliment to the Backflip. We'll keep an eye out -- and you let us know if you hear anything good, okay?

Apple’s upcoming tablet spotted on the Internet?: "

According to mobile applications analytics firm Flurry, the Apple tablet is alive and kicking in the halls of Apple’s Cupertino campus. The analytics firm has supposedly detected the presence of an estimated fifty Apple tablets, first detected last October, whose location can be traced back to Cupertino. The tablet, whose usage has spiked in recent weeks, is reportedly testing over 200 different applications, the bulk of which are games, entertainment, news, books, and lifestyle applications. Now, for a reality check, we personally couldnt imagine a possible tablet running anything other than OS 4.0. So whether this is just a new iPhone in testing, sonething else, or even a way to throw people off track, we don’t know. We do have a barrage of potential names, and a handful of potential content partners though, so we’ll just have to wait until Wednesday for Apple to make this device official.

AT&T rumored to lose iPhone exclusivity this Wednesday?: "

“But it’s tied down to AT&T…” Those may be words that you’ll never hear again when it comes to the iPhone. Now, it’s not written in stone just yet, but one of Hot Hardware’s inside sources feels very confident that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity during Apple’s big announcement this week. If this is true, coupled with an announcement / beta release of iPhone 4.0, Apple’s iPhone sales could skyrocket — especially since some people have avoided the iPhone like the plague strictly because of AT&T. Where will the iPhone go? Will there be an unlocked version available? We’re not quite sure, but we’ll find out soon as it’s shaping up to be a big week for Apple with a tablet announcement, iPhone 4.0 and now possibly the iPhone may finally be unshackled from AT&T’s grip. One thing to consider, however, is that if AT&T loses its exclusivity this Wednesday, who’s going to want to buy an AT&T-locked iPhone until the next generation model comes out? That alone gives us some doubt.

Officially speaking, the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus still have a weekend ahead of 'em before they can be sold, but if you know the right person in your local Best Buy, you could very well be playing with one hours before your contemporaries. Palm crafting GSM versions of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus?: "

Pardon us if we're playing the role of Captain Obvious here, but just a heads up: we've got some pretty solid evidence before our eyes that Palm has GSM versions of both Verizon's Pre Plus and Pixi Plus in the pipe. Said proof comes via the certification gurus at TUV Rheinland who've listed both a P101UNA and P121UNA in their systems from Palm; P101 and P121 are the numeric codes for the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, respectively, and "UNA" indicates a GSM variant (versus the deliciously underhanded "EWW" for CDMA). Now, neither AT&T nor Palm have given a lick of indication what two models they'll be releasing later this year -- but this is certainly a convenient coincidence, isn't it?

The Wall Street Journal has chimed in with its assessment of the Apple tablet and has described the many ways Steve Jobs is supposedly aiming to reshape how we read books, browse newspapers, play games and consume TV with Apple’s new tablet device. Long a stronghold, Apple is reportedly courting the educational market and has developed this tablet with electronic textbook technology which will presumably take the e-book reading experience a step beyond the current Kindle-experience.

Mobile donations for Haiti reach $30M: "
Donations made via text message continue to pour in for Haitians earthquake relief as aftershocks hamper rescue efforts. The Mobile Giving Foundation said more than $30 million had been collected from mobile subscribers since the earthquake struck. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless said it had transmitted $4.84 million to the American Red Cross relief effort for Haiti and that its customers had pledged at least $7.82 million to the Red Cross relief effort so far. Texting campaign for Haitian relief tops $4M: "

In the past 36 hours, mobile subscribers across the country have pledged more than $4 million in aid to Haitians after the devastating earthquake there, according to the Red Cross. The mobile donations, made via a text messaging campaign, represent fully one-third of all of the funds the aid organization has raised so far in the aftermath of the earthquake, which struck Haiti Tuesday evening. Mobile donations solutions provider mGive launched the effort in association with the Red Cross and the U.S. Department of State. Verizon Wireless to overhaul its phone and data pricing plans: "

One of our connects hit us up with some changes Verizon Wireless is making to its calling plans effective January 18th. The details are coming in slowly but it looks like Big Red (not the gum) is ditching the all-inclusive Premium plan and renaming the current Basic plan to Nationwide Talk, and the Select Plan to Nationwide Talk & Text. A 30% drop in pricing on the unlimited minutes options for each of these plans is expected to accompany the name changes. Verizon also reconfirms the changes to the feature phone data plans which includes a new $9.99 data plan with 25MB and mobile email and a $29.99 unlimited plan with mobile email. Additionally, overage charges for the new $9.99 plan have been decreased from 50¢ to 20¢ per MB. All 3G multimedia phones, a category which has been expanded to include the enV3, Chocolate Touch and others, will now require a data plan of $9.99 or higher, like we reported. MagicJack's new cellular product raises legal questions: "
MagicJack's new GSM femtocell product could lead to a bruising legal battle over whether it is illegally using spectrum licensed to GSM carriers AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA. The device, which parent company YMax unveiled last week at the Consumer Electronics Show, allows GSM mobile phones to make calls through a femtocell connected to a user's computer (and a broadband connection). The call is routed via VoIP technology, and users can get a year of free calls to the U.S. and Canada for $20.

MetroPCS revamps unlimited plans: "
MetroPCS unveiled a new pricing scheme for its unlimited prepaid plans, called Wireless for All, which includes the cost of taxes and fees in the total cost of the plans. The company, which has suffered weaker subscriber growth in the face of intensifying competition in the prepaid market, said the new plans--ranging from $40 per month to $60--will entice subscribers with simplified pricing. The carrier also released preliminary subscriber numbers for the fourth quarter.

Sprint hooking up with Walmart for WiMAX buildout?: "

Sprint's got a nice head start in the 4G race over Verizon and AT&T -- a message it's heavily broadcasting these days -- but with the onslaught of LTE networks and equipment around the world now just months away, momentum is unquestionably going to shift, giving the carrier every reason to act quickly to build out now and score as many subscribers as it possibly can. That seems to be the gist of a rumor coming out of AndroidGuys today that says Sprint is working on a deal with Walmart to install WiMAX cells on all (yes, all) of its locations, a move that would give it a significant boost in national coverage while presumably lowering infrastructure costs significantly. As many Walmarts as there are, it seems like this would still leave huge coverage gaps (particularly in rural areas) between locations, but hey -- maybe these guys are going for the parking lot RV crowd, which would actually make a ton of sense. Best part? You'd probably be able to buy the modem right in the store.

Google charges its own ETF for Nexus One in addition to T-Mobile’s ETF: "

Here’s a bit of interesting news on the purchasing and cancellation process for the Nexus One. If you buy the device subsidized, and you decide to cancel your contract after the 14-day period (30 days for California) but before 120 days into your contract, Google can charge a termination fee of its own — on top of the carrier ETF. Shocking? Yeah, a little bit. You’d imagine that if you’re paying for a subsidized device and you cancel your contract, you’d just be paying the remainder of the subsidy. Why isn’t this completely surprising? Well, if you purchase a handset with a wireless data plan from an authorized third party, like an electronics store, you sometimes end up getting into the same agreement. Many third-party retailers charge their own fees on top of carrier fees. Still, it doesn’t make it right. Here’s what Google has to say:

LG Rumor Touch launches for Sprint: "

LG and Sprint launched another set at CES today, a follow up to the Rumor line, the LG Rumor Touch. This new iteration features little sprinkles of joy such as a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, QWERTY landscape keyboard, GPS, 2 megapixel camera, and EV-DO Rev. 0. The app selection includes a suite of things you'd expect -- and maybe love -- featuring Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, Music, Mobile Mail, Corporate Mail, threaded text messaging, and a pile of social apps. The LG Rumor Touch should hit Sprint brick and mortar shops sometime this quarter -- though, feel free to pre-order now -- but unfortunately, the price remains a mystery, for now.

Windows Mobile 7 coming to MWC in February, not just 'evolutionary': "

We'd heard some rumblings, but apparently Robbie Bach let the cat out of the bag at an analyst briefing this week, stating that we should expect a showing of Windows Mobile 7 at the Mobile World Congress show in Spain, which begins on February 15th. He also added that the OS (which he's played with, surprisingly) will 'set the bar forward not in (just) an evolutionary way,' and that Microsoft is going to be 'more engaged' with OEMs in its 'go to market approach.' We love a good buzzword or three, but the hope here is that Microsoft has learned its lesson from iPhone and Android and is ready to compete in the next-gen smartphone game in a big way -- a WinMo 7 showing just four months after the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 certainly smacks of that.

Boost Mobile, part of Sprint Nextel's prepaid unit, said beginning next week its $50 monthly unlimited plan will be available on Sprint's national CDMA network. Boost previously offered its unlimited prepaid service on Sprint's iDEN network, though it has dabbled in CDMA in the past. Today's action, though, marks a deliberate move by Sprint to broaden its prepaid offerings.

Palm Pre Plus, Pixi Plus get official, Verizon Wireless scoop ‘em up: "

Not exactly the most surprising news, but in short, the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus got official moments ago, with Verizon Wireless signing on to carry both devices (at a rumored 200,000 initial units each) starting January 25th. Pricing was not announced. In addition to the two refreshed devices, which add more memory, a refined and refreshed look as well as Wi-Fi on the Pixi, Palm also announced some SDK improvements. First off, there’s a new PDK (plug-in development kit) that will allow game developers to start making great 3D games, and starting today, you’ll see games start appearing in the App Catalog from publishers like EA Mobile.

AT&T, T-Mobile Complete Network Upgrades: "
AT&T and T-Mobile USA both say they have completed network upgrades to HSPA 7.2, which supports peak maximum speeds of 7.2 megabits per second.

Motorola Backflip hands-on: "

We're not quite sure what to make of the Backflip just yet -- closed, it looks almost exactly like a CLIQ, but the keyboard (which rests on the outside of the device) is allegedly rugged enough to withstand a beating. Rugged or not, we're worried about feel -- believe it or not, it has even less tactile response to it than the Droid, putting it a distant third in Moto's QWERTY Android efforts so far. Obviously we'll need a good deal more time to gel our opinion, but out of the gate, we're not encouraged.

HTC HD2 officially headed to T-Mobile: "

We had a pretty clear indication that this one was coming, but Microsoft and HTC have now finally announced that the HD2 Windows Mobile phone is officially headed to T-Mobile. Unfortunately, no one is being very specific about launch details just yet, but it will apparently be out sometime this Spring for a still to be determined price.
